Amazing. .

Now I am watching the calorie burn rates on the elliptical. . .do you know you burn more on the Adaptive Motion Trainer? I can burn that 800 calories right off! I am going to be skinny in no time.

I get frustrated when Coco (my personal trainer) tries to give me food ideas and recipes. I seriously don’t want to hear it! I don’t want to enjoy this crazy deprivation! I want to get to my goal so I can start over and eat real food again! I would be happy with the gruel from the Matrix. . colourless slop that I could just shovel in on the run . .

It is like suddenly watching my inner Anorexic come out to play.

And I still don’t seem to lose any weight.

Have you been here? Welcome to your new, improved metabolism . . .

While your brain is playing these head games, it is your body that has to deal with the deprivation and overexercise. You become fatigued and inclined to injury during your workouts. You are not getting the kind of body improvements because you don’t have the energy to do the damage to improve or the nutrients to heal stronger.

When you consume less calories as a part of a sensible diet plan, your body starts trimming it’s caloric expenditure. It is a subtle change but if weight loss is your goal, you notice it because you now burning less calories at rest……when most daily calories are burned….. bummer, eh?

Exercising (aerobics and weight training) help tremendously because they stimulate your body to have a higher metabolism. Muscle mass is even more helpful because it is a fuel burning engine that requires more calories to maintain itself at rest than fat does.

But then you cut back a bit more on your intake. .then a bit more. .

Your metabolism drops. It drops a lot. Now you don’t have the energy to do an effective workout. You are not able to work muscles really hard because there is simply no gas in the tank.

If you do get a bit out of your muscles during this stage, they need rest and repair. Rest happens, but cutting calories usually means cutting out the necessary nutrients that those muscles need to repair. . .so they don’t. . you don’t get really stronger and you are prone to longer periods of DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). On top of it, you start to feel frustrated that you are not making any gains in strength (’cause your not!)..so you up the weight or repetitions and hurt yourself.

All thought great gains that you thought you were making don’t happen. You can call it a plateau if you want, but you aren’t going anywhere. So maybe you do something really stupid and cut back even more. .

Or maybe not…

You need give your head a shake, spank your inner child and make the decision to fuel the body through the day. I love that word fuel!! In order to function well, the body needs to have energy to do solid workouts and the proper nutrients to rebuild the body as it exercises, ages and deals with illness…..

Depending on your age, gender, goal and level of fitness, you should be fueling between 6-8 times a day. The amounts are not huge, but the quality is important.

You need protein in every meal and be mindful of the amount and quality of the carbohydrates you are consuming. Water, vitamins and supplements are required at regular intervals.

Most importantly, do yourself a huge favour!! Find a personal trainer or a nutritionist that you can trust for a consult or an entire program. You will need individual attention to custom a program encompassing food and exercise and goals to your individual body.

And don’t buy into some get-thin-quick, hokey, gimmicky package program. Losing track of the quality of the food you eat probably got you into this problem in the first place! Stick with something where you can identify and prepare the food you eat or the supplements you take.

Next time, I am going to talk about how goals improve your program..

One of the biggest problems I have had in my weight loss journey has been the tendencies to extremes.
